Endorsement AlertsMrs. Shirley Rivens Smith

“I have been in politics since I was 15 years old. I have liked a lot of candidates and a lot of elected officials, but I have never met a person more genuine about our community than Faith. She truly cares about making the community a place where everyone feels like they are an important part. It shows in the way she gets involved in making things better.

What excites me about Faith is that she is so real, and she is also very intelligent and can stand with anyone on the Council and represent us like a pro.” – Shirley Rivens Smith

Neighbors and Friends:

I am so honored and proud to be endorsed by Mrs. Shirley Rivens Smith.  A second generation native Washingtonian, she is a Ward 5 icon.  “Ms. Shirley” as she is affectionately known, has been actively working to improve and enrich our community for many decades. She was one of the first people to welcome our family to the ward with open arms, and she has always looked out for us. I’m sure she has done that for countless others.

Her recognition of my work in our community means a lot to me. My efforts are not for recognition, but come from an understanding of how important it is to have a community that surrounds its most vulnerable neighbors and finds the strengths in the diversity of its people. I know this from personal experience, having been raised by a young, single mom who felt seen and supported by community members.

I love living in Ward 5 because of people like Ms. Shirley. I want to work to make it a place where she and others like her can comfortably age in their homes, without being vulnerable to high property taxes and real estate opportunists, or have access to affordable senior housing. None of our seniors should go without food or other necessities. I want Ms. Shirley and her neighbors to feel safe as they leave their homes and move around our city. I want them to have easy access to public transportation and other important city services to enrich their daily lives.

Ms. Shirley and her family are an important part of this community’s history and I am humbled that she believes in my ability to contribute to its future. As your next Councilmember, I will work hard for Ms. Shirley and for you, to deliver policies and bring resources to our community so that we can all thrive together.

Thank you, Ms. Shirley!

In partnership,

Faith Gibson Hubbard
