Neighbors and Friends:
Today I am excited to share that LaShada Ham Campbell, lifelong Ward 5 resident and owner of Petit Scholars, is endorsing my candidacy for the Ward 5 DC Council seat!
LaShada’s endorsement means so much to me for several reasons. She has deep roots in our community, as a 4th generation Ward 5 resident, a veteran public school educator and the founder/owner of Petit Scholars Early Learning Center, which now has five locations, all in Ward 5. I have watched LaShada go through the ups and downs of growing her business, and I have seen the huge impact she has made in our community, as an educator and as an employer.
Access to high-quality, affordable child care is a lifeline for so many families in Ward 5 and throughout our city. I know this first hand as the mother of two. It is because of child care that I was able to go to work every day knowing my children were safe, loved and learning. In high quality child care programs, early learning educators work daily to pour into the lives of young children, building the critical foundation for them to thrive.
As the first Executive Director of Thrive by Five DC, I was determined to make sure there was more equitable access to child care and resource supports for DC families – and that is evidenced through my work. I am proud of the coalition I led with the Thrive by Five Coordinating Council, to focus on increasing access to child care seats across the city, and in Ward 5, through targeted, dedicated city funding and stabilizing support for child care businesses. I am overjoyed to see that the work I did, shoulder-to-shoulder with other advocates and families, laid the foundation for the implementation of the Birth-To-Three For All Act. And, just last week an additional $10 million was announced, for childcare and the much-needed increase in pay for early learning educators.
As your next councilmember, I will continue to ensure that quality early learning, and lifelong learning, remains a priority for the development of our future generations, and to enable our families, our communities and our economy to prosper.
I am proud of LaShada’s contributions to our community, as an educator and entrepreneur, and I am honored to have her support, her confidence and her vote.
